Autumn Hues

On Route 6A just before you cross the Barnstable / Sandwich line, there is a marsh on the right hand side. I've painted that scene in the summer while it has marsh mallows blooming. It is one of my favorite sites. You can see Sandy Neck in the distance and the marsh colors change constantly. My friend Joyce and I were taking pictures in October and came across this scene. It was bursting vibrant colors. Even though I had a deadline, I couldn't resist painting this. It was so much fun I cranked it out in a day.

My deepest apology. I haven't been online to fix my blog in a wicked long time. I even forgot my password - that is how long it has been. I have an exhibit coming up and had to get some work photographed. I actually have quite a few new pieces I have to put on the blog. I'll try to be better about posting. Morning Path

Behind the Visitors Center at the Cape Cod National Seashore building in Eastham are paths. One of them you have to go when it is low tide - either that or prepare to get wet. I went for a walk one morning early around 7:00. It was so stunningly beautiful - it was breathtaking. Every turn had something amazing to see. I have to go down there again some time. I'm sure no matter what season - it will inspire me.

Treasure Old Friend

There is a barn in Dennis that has an old truck in it. I have wanted to paint that scene for a long time. This year I had an exhibit and needed to pull some artwork together quickly. I needed to paint what I really wanted to paint - something I could really get into. Immediately I thought of the truck. It was a lot of fun and it came together quickly. It reminds me of all the old trucks my Dad used to fix up. He did an amazing job on them and it was always sad to see them go.

Sandwich Boardwalk

For years I've gone to the Sandwich Boardwalk. It is so pretty there. This season you could really see how it has changed. The erosion is taking it's toll. But . . . that is natures way and it is still beautiful. I have yet to make it there in time for the flowers blooming on the dunes. There is a purple hue covering them. I either get there too soon or too late. There is always next year.

Peaceful Haven

The cottage could be anywhere on the north side of the Cape. This particular one is on Breakwater Beach. It was a nice little surprise. I was drawn to it because of the shadows and the beautiful wisps of dune grass. The actual painting is much prettier than the photograph I think. For some reason the color blue rather overwhelming in the image.

Reflective Walk

I posted this painting a while ago. It seems like every painting has a destination. Some paintings won't sell for a couple of years, and then the perfect owner comes along and purchases it. I think this painting was meant to go to The Sampson Fund. This image is rather small. The actual painting is 16 x 20 (I think). In the distance is a man walking his black lab. I hope it does well in the auction.

Cape Cod Cottage Front View

The Sampson Fund is having their 6th Annual Birdhouse and More Auction on May 3, 2009, from 1:00-4:00 at the Wequassett Inn (Route 28, Chatham, MA). This fund provides financial assistance to sick or injured pets whose care is too costly for their owners. It also provides financial assistance for veterinary services provided to abandoned and stray animals. The Sampson fund is a non-profit charitable corporation created to benefit companion animals of Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard. It is financed completely by membership fees and donations. For tickets to The Birdhouses and More Auction, contact Laurie at 508-778-5150. Tickets are $25 for pre-registration and $30 on the Day of the Auction. I donated a birdhouse (Cape Cod Cottage) and a painting (Reflective Walk).

Sandy Neck Light

I love this view of the lighthouse. I've taken many photos of Sandy Neck Lighthouse from several angles. I suppose there is no bad angle. This is a mini painting that I painted for the "Off The Wall 2" exhibit at Cape Cod Art Association. This and the following three paintings I donated for their annual event. All paintings are 4 x 6 and are sold for $60. All of the money goes directly to Cape Cod Art Association (non profit organization). The grand opening is on March 13th at 4:00 p.m. The exhibit will run for three days. There are several popular artists from the Cape that have donated paintings. All of the paintings are signed on the back, so there is a little mystery. Of course I'm blowing my cover by posting this. So. . . shhhhh . . . it is a secret. Last year the event was a huge success. I hope all of mine sell. CCAA has been good to me and it would make me feel good knowing I helped support them in some small way.

Sandy Neck Dunes

My favorite lighthouse is on Sandy Neck. As kids we would go to Sandy Neck beach every weekend. It was a highlight of the summer when we would go all the way to the point where the lighthouse was. Now my husband and I go there several times a summer. Some times we bring the kids and go down on the beach. In the coolness of the mornings, we set up in the dunes protected from the wind where it is warm and cozy. By mid morning it is too hot to be in the dunes and we move down by the shoreline. I don't think I'll ever tire of going to Sandy Neck beach.

Morning Colors

In the summer we usually leave for fishing when it is still dark. I love getting on the water as the sun is rising. It is my favorite time of day. The sky is starting to turn a light blue and then the most brilliant light starts coming over the horizon. It is breath taking. One morning we were out around Barnstable Harbor overlooking Sandy Neck when the morning colors starting pouring onto the marsh. This is a little mini painting - 4x6. A test run for a future painting.

Keveney Lane Bridge

On the border of Barnstable and Yarmouth is a road called Keveney Lane. It takes you down by Cape Cod Bay and through the marsh. I've taken pictures on the bridge, down by the bridge, and in every direction of the bridge. Thousands of artists have painted down here. Last summer my daughter worked at Anthony's of Cummaquid. The view behind there is stunning. Lyndsay got me the opportunity to go upstairs on the deck of Anthony's and I took some amazing shots that show a whole new angle to this area. This is a little mini painting - only 4 x 6. I'll paint another larger one later. Considering it is early March, it was nice seeing the greens again.

Shades of Autumn

This is a scene from Paines Creek in Brewster - or maybe it is Dennis . . . either way it is a stunning area. The seasons were about to change over and the Cape was becoming peaceful again. My favorite time of year.

Marsh Mallows In Bloom

This marsh is in full bloom in August. The dunes in the background are from Sandy Neck. This painting is hanging in the Atrium at the Dan'l Webster Inn and Spa in Sandwich. I was just informed that they picked this image to be on their special Easter and Mother's Day menus. They serve well over 2000 people those two days - and each of them will see my painting. To say I'm honored is an understatement. I'm thrilled they picked it.

Best Seat in Town

Through out the Cape you will find people sitting peacefully on the beach benches watching the waves and taking in all the activity of the beach. It is January now and it just snowed . . . so I doubt there are any couples out there now.

Peaceful Path

In Brewster there is a beautiful path to the ocean. In the summer the trees and bushes are in full foliage and make the path look like a secret garden. The shadows have amazing colors in them. Traveling down the path is a refreshing break from the sun. The path itself has a steep incline and then as you go over the dune, Cape Cod Bay comes into view. The sandbars are deep sienna and it is a very beautiful and peaceful place.

Bursting Sunflowers

Back in September I went to Fort Hill in Eastham. That time of year is absolutely stunning down there. All of the wild flowers are in full bloom and the foliage is just starting to turn. Unfortunately, when I got there I discovered they had mowed it all down. Everything was gone. I was so disappointed. As I was driving away I noticed a red barn with a big row of sunflowers. I almost drove right past them. No one was behind me and so I backed up to take in their beauty. They more than made up for my previous disappointment. I took several photos of them and this is the first of several I'm sure I'll paint. They were just past peek - but still beautiful.

Earlier I painted a path leading through the trees to the beach. This is the other side of that path. It is overlooking Cape Cod Bay and it was early September I think. I have another angle I want to try. That day at the beach I got a lot of reference shots that I'll be working off of this winter.

Sesuit Shadows

Sesuit Beach is one of many on Cape Cod Bay. I actually got lost trying to find the right path back to the parking lot. The dunes look so similar and there are several paths off of the beach. This painting is little - 5x7 and I scanned it - so the quality isn't very good. I'll be putting it in the "Small Wonders" show at Cape Cod Art Association today. I have one other watercolor that will also go in. There are several shows running about the same time frame. So I'm a bit frazzled.

Shady Beach Path

In Brewster overlooking Cape Cod Bay there are many beach paths. This one is my favorite. There are several old crooked trees growing and the brush is thick. It isn't your typical pathway. This painting shows how it looks in early Autumn.

Autumn Colors

Autumn is by far my favorite time of year. The marshes and dunes turn to different shades of gold. The air is crisp and the sun is still warm. It is the best time of year by far.

Sunrise Over Sandy Neck

Sandy Neck Light has always been one of my favorites. As kids we would sleep overnight in our camp at Sandy Neck. On rare occasions we would go all the way down to the point and see the light. We no longer can stay overnight at the camp, but I still enjoy an occasional trip to the light. My husband and I will take our boat out of Barnstable Harbor and go over to Sandy Neck. On any early summer morning, you can set up a blanket on the beach and have it all to yourself. We have also kayaked over to the beach. It is too cold now to go over, but there is always next summer.

Nantucket Wave

Summer has passed and the beach now belongs to the seagulls and pipers. It is so quiet and peaceful walking along the shore. And . . . wicked chilly.

A Reflective Walk

On the north side beaches of the Cape, you can walk for miles on the sand bars at low tide. I've always been drawn to the reflections in the tidal pools. I love the interesting patterns the water makes when it is drawn back into the bay. There is nothing more peaceful than walking along a sand bar listening to the waves break along the beach. A friend of mine, Linda Phillips, gave me her photograph to use as a reference for this painting.

Autumn Morning Mist

One of the paintings in the exhibit is "Autumn Morning Mist". On the way to the bus stop I pass by Crab Creek. One morning it was so stunning, I had to go home and get the camera. The fall foliage was peak - there were ducks dabbling in the water - the mist was just starting to burn off - and the morning sun was turning everything a vibrant shade of gold. I knew it would make a beautiful painting. I thoroughly enjoyed working on it.

14 Artists...2 Decades...1 Teacher

Cape Cod Waterworks is holding an exhibit at the Brewster Ladies' Library for the month of October. The exhibit is a collection of work of several artists who all studied under Jane Heyerdahl. Since Jane retired and moved to Vermont, we all decided to hold one more exhibit together. What Jane didn't know, was that we were making this exhibit a tribute to her. The name of the exhibit is: 14 Artists ... 2 Decades ... 1 Teacher. On October 4th, 2008 we had an artist reception. It was a great turnout and it was a lot of fun.

Jane taught us all watercolor at Cape Cod Community College. After the course was over, several of her students wanted to continue on. Jane and a few students decided to meet as a group to critique and encourage each other. Over the past 20 years, the group has grown. I was one of the last of her students to join the group. At one point they had a gallery in Falmouth and since then several of the artists have moved on to start their own galleries. We have exhibited many times together and have helped each other through difficult times. It is a wonderful group of artists and I'm thrilled to be a part of it.

"Marsh Mallows in Bloom"

If you are driving down 6A about enter into Sandwich, and you glance to the right, this is what you will see. The marsh is in full bloom with purple flowers (sorry I forget what they are called) and pink marsh mallows. The dunes of Sandy Neck are in the background. This painting was selected by the Dan'l Webster Inn and Spa for their menu gallery. The actual painting is in The Watershed Gallery in Cataumet, MA until Columbus Day weekend (508-563-9395)

"Goldies"

At Gray's Beach in the late summer or early fall, the goldenrods and wild flowers are at their fullest. This is the perfect spot to take in a sunset. Many people come and sit at the end of the boardwalk watching the sun go down. This painting was one of the ones that was selected by the Dan'l Webster Inn and Spa's menu gallery. At this posting, the Dan'l Webster Inn has this painting for sale and will be displaying it.

Acadian Summer

"Afternoon Blues"

This is a typical beach scene on the north side of Cape Cod. The sand is still hot from the afternoon sun and yet the cool blue shade is a sweet relief. This painting was selected for the Dan'l Webster Inn & Spa's menu gallery. It was also used in their press releases.
